Best Places for a Late-Summer Walk in the North Hills

Best Places for a Late-Summer Walk in the North Hills

Late summer is one of my favorite times to get outside in Pittsburgh’s North Hills. The days are still long, the trees are green, and the evenings often bring just enough relief from the heat to make a walk especially enjoyable.

Whether you want a paved route around the water, a quiet nature trail, or a peaceful walk through fields and woods, there are plenty of good options close to home. Here are five of my favorite places to enjoy the final stretch of summer.

North Park Lake Trail

North Park is the obvious place to begin—and for good reason. The five-mile paved Lake Trail circles the 66-acre lake and offers changing views throughout the walk. You may see kayakers, anglers, turtles, waterfowl, and other wildlife along the way.

The full loop is a good choice when you want a longer walk, but you do not have to complete all five miles. With parking and amenities available in several areas, it is easy to choose a shorter out-and-back route. The Boathouse is a particularly scenic starting point.

Keep in mind that portions of the trail follow roads with nearby traffic, so stay aware of your surroundings. If you go during the evening, the light across the water can be beautiful.

Latodami Nature Center Trails

For a quieter North Park experience, head to the trails around Latodami Nature Center. This part of the park feels more wooded and natural than the busy lake loop.

The interconnected trails pass through meadow, wetland, and forest ecosystems, with streams, ponds, and educational signs along the way. It is a lovely place for a slower walk when you want to notice birds, wildflowers, and the subtle changes that begin appearing near the end of summer.

Because these are natural trails, conditions can be muddy after rain. Wear appropriate shoes and check the trail map before setting out.

Hartwood Acres

Hartwood Acres offers something completely different. The park combines wooded trails and open meadows with the historic Tudor mansion, formal gardens, stables, and an outdoor sculpture collection.

For an easy walk, explore the paved paths around the mansion and Sculpture Garden. The county also identifies a paved trail system extending toward the amphitheater, with additional paths around the concert grounds and wildflower meadow. It is a wonderful choice when you want scenery without committing to a rugged hike.

If you prefer the woods, Hartwood also has natural-surface trails with more hills and uneven terrain. The variety makes it easy to choose a walk that matches your time and energy level.

Pine Community Park

Pine Community Park is a convenient option in Wexford for anyone who wants a neighborhood park with both walking and hiking opportunities.

The park includes a fishing lake, nature trails, sports fields, playgrounds, and other recreational amenities. Its color-coded trail system includes loop options, making it possible to choose a shorter walk or connect sections for more time outdoors.

Because this is an active community park, it works especially well when different members of the household want to do different things. One person can walk while others use the playground, fields, or courts.

Sewickley Heights Borough Park

If you are looking for a peaceful walk that feels removed from suburban activity, Sewickley Heights Borough Park is worth exploring. The park encompasses more than 1,000 acres of undeveloped fields and woods managed for conservation, education, and recreation.

The surroundings feel quiet and wonderfully natural, with a mix of wooded paths and open areas. It is an especially pretty place in late summer, when the fields are full and green but the first hints of fall are beginning to appear.

The trails are more natural than a paved park loop, so plan for uneven or muddy conditions and use the park’s information and posted guidance when choosing your route.

A Few Late-Summer Walking Tips

Late August can still be hot and humid, so morning and evening walks are often the most comfortable. Bring water, use insect repellent, and check the weather before heading onto a wooded trail. After rain, expect roots, rocks, and low areas to be slippery or muddy.

Trail conditions, access, and park rules can change. Check the official park website or posted signage before your visit, especially if you are bringing a dog, planning a longer hike, or arriving close to sunset.

One of the best things about living in Pittsburgh’s North Hills is having so much green space nearby. These parks make it easy to step away from a busy schedule, enjoy the last weeks of summer, and remember why this area is such a wonderful place to call home.

If you are thinking about moving to the North Hills, I would be happy to help you explore the communities, neighborhoods, and local amenities that make each area unique.
