The Best Late-Summer Activities in Pittsburgh’s North Hills

The Best Late-Summer Activities in Pittsburgh’s North Hills

Late summer is one of the best times to enjoy Pittsburgh’s North Hills. The days are still warm, the evenings are beginning to feel a little more comfortable, and there is just enough time to squeeze in a few more outdoor adventures before school schedules and fall routines take over.

Whether you enjoy walking, kayaking, farmers markets, live music, or simply finding a good place for an ice cream cone, there are plenty of ways to make the most of August and early September close to home.

Spend a Day at North Park

North Park is always at the top of my list. At more than 3,000 acres, it offers something for almost everyone, including walking and hiking trails, tennis and pickleball courts, playgrounds, a golf course, an off-leash dog park, and one of the largest swimming pools in the region.

The 66-acre lake is especially beautiful in late summer. You can walk or bike around the lake, fish, rent a kayak or paddleboard, or relax near the boathouse and enjoy the view. The park is also home to Latodami Nature Center, which offers trails and programs focused on local wildlife and natural habitats.

North Park is one of my favorite places for a walk—and it is easy to turn a simple outing into an afternoon with lunch near the boathouse or a stop for ice cream afterward. Learn more about North Park.

Enjoy a Movie Under the Stars

Outdoor movie nights are a fun way to take advantage of warm summer evenings. Allegheny County presents free, family-friendly movies in its parks during the summer, including screenings on the North Park Boathouse Lawn.

Bring chairs or a blanket, pack a few snacks, and arrive early enough to find a comfortable spot. The county’s 2026 schedule includes Zootopia 2 at North Park on August 20, along with a special presentation from the National Aviary before the movie.

Schedules can change because of weather, so check the Allegheny County Parks calendar before heading out.

Explore Hartwood Acres

Hartwood Acres is another North Hills treasure. The park offers wooded trails, open meadows, gardens, an off-leash dog park, and a sculpture garden with 14 works of art that visitors can explore on a self-guided walk.

You can also tour the historic mansion or enjoy one of Allegheny County’s free summer concerts at the amphitheater. Even without a scheduled event, Hartwood is a lovely place for a picnic, a walk through the gardens, or a quiet late-summer evening outdoors. Explore Hartwood Acres.

Visit a Local Farmers Market

August is an ideal time to shop for local tomatoes, corn, peaches, peppers, flowers, baked goods, and other seasonal favorites. Farmers markets also provide an easy way to support local growers and small businesses.

The Sewickley Farmers Market is held Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. James parking lot on Walnut Street. The Ross Township Farmers Market operates on Wednesdays, and the Cranberry Township Town Square Market is held on Friday afternoons through September 4, with no market on August 7 in 2026.

Market schedules and vendors can occasionally change, so confirm the details before visiting.

Get an Early Taste of Apple Season

Late August begins the transition from summer produce to early apple season. A visit to Soergel Orchards in Wexford is a wonderful way to enjoy both.

Stop by the farm market for fresh produce, visit the bakery, browse the garden center and shops, or enjoy a cider slushie or ice cream. Early varieties such as Paula Red, Jersey Mac, Rambo, Zestar, and Sansa typically arrive during August, although availability depends on the harvest.

It is a nice time to visit before the busiest fall weekends begin.

Take a Late-Summer Walk or Bike Ride

You do not need to plan an entire day to enjoy the season. An early-morning walk or evening bike ride can be one of the simplest ways to appreciate the North Hills before summer ends.

North Park and Hartwood Acres offer plenty of trail options, while local parks such as Blueberry Hill Park in Franklin Park, Graham Park in Cranberry Township, and Pine Community Park provide additional places to walk, play, or enjoy a picnic.

Late summer can still be hot and humid, so bring water, use sunscreen, and consider going earlier or later in the day.

Spend an Afternoon in Sewickley Village

Sewickley Village makes an easy late-summer outing. Start with the farmers market on Saturday morning, browse the locally owned shops, stop for coffee or lunch, and enjoy a relaxed walk through the business district.

It is a good choice when you want to get out of the house without committing to a major excursion. You can combine it with a visit to a nearby park or simply enjoy a meal outside while the weather is still warm.

Plan a Picnic and Let the Day Unfold

Some of the best summer days are the least complicated. Pack sandwiches, fruit, cold drinks, and a blanket, then head to a local park. Bring a ball, a book, or a deck of cards and enjoy a few hours without a schedule.

North Park, Hartwood Acres, Pine Community Park, and Graham Park all offer room to spread out and enjoy the outdoors. Many parks also have playgrounds, sports facilities, or trails, making it easy for everyone to choose an activity.

Enjoy the Last Weeks of Summer Close to Home

Late summer always seems to pass quickly. Between vacations, back-to-school preparations, and busy work schedules, it is easy to move straight into fall without taking advantage of these final warm weeks.

Fortunately, living in Pittsburgh’s North Hills means you do not have to travel far to enjoy nature, community events, fresh local food, and beautiful outdoor spaces. Choose one or two activities, invite a friend, bring the dog, or make it a spontaneous afternoon. Sometimes the best memories are made close to home.
